What Oil Does My Volkswagen Need?
This is the biggest thing that makes a VW oil change different.
Volkswagen doesn’t just ask for “5W-30” or “0W-20.” It asks for oil that has passed VW’s own test and earned an approval number. You’ll see that number in your owner’s manual and on the oil bottle. The common ones are:
- VW 502 00: found in many older gas VWs
- VW 504 00: a long-life oil for many gas engines
- VW 508 00: a thin 0W-20 oil that many newer VWs call for
Here’s the catch: these oils are not swap-and-go. A newer engine built for VW 508 00 oil needs that oil, and an older engine built for VW 502 00 or 504 00 shouldn’t get the thin 508 00 oil. Using the wrong one can cause problems and can hurt a warranty claim.

How often should you change your VW’s oil? Volkswagen’s US schedule generally calls for an oil change every 10,000 miles or once a year, whichever comes first. But Mesa summers are brutal.
